WHCM Recommends | Margaret

As this summer starts to wind down, you may feel the last minute urge to run outside and take in every last bit of summer fun and sun. You’re not alone. We at WHCM have have gathered our DJs together to give you their personal recommendations for places, spaces and things in the Chicagoland area that YOU should check out. Today, Margaret (Host of Taylor Time) tells us her favorite places to visit. Make sure you take her advice for the Palatine Street Fest, as that starts this weekend (Friday, August 25th through Sunday, August 27th). It may be hot but remember, here in the Midwest that is both a rarity and luxury. Enjoy it if you can! – Matt Byrne, WHCM General Manager

1. Which place in the Chicagoland area would you recommend to visit in the summer and why?

Margaret: Congo River Golf is a great place to go mini-golfing. It is located in Hoffman Estates, a suburb outside of Chicago. Congo River Golf has two 18-hole courses to choose from, called Congo Rapids and Congo Falls. The two courses follow along the man made river and man made waterfall, respectively. Both courses are surrounded by the decorations, landscaping, and other details that set Congo River Golf apart from other mini-golf places. These include plenty of fake rocks, totem poles, an old safari vehicle, and man made mine shaft entrance, designed to looks abandoned. It is also near a Steak ‘n Shake, perfect for the loser to treat the winner to shakes after a game of mini-golf.

2. Chicago area EVENT to visit this summer and why?

Margaret: Palatine Street Fest is so much fun. Palatine Street Fest takes place in-you guessed it-Palatine, Illinois, from August 25th through August 27th. The downtown area of the suburb is closed to cars so people are free to mill around as they please. Food vendors line the street, but you can also choose to eat at one of the many local establishments in the area. In my opinion, the best part of Palatine Street Fest is the music. There is a stage located in the center of all of the action, and different bands perform everyday. I highly recommend getting some friends together, buying some ice cream from My Flavor It Place (an ice cream store in the downtown area), and then signing and dancing your hearts out while the bands play.

3. What is your go-to summer RESTAURANT and why?

Margaret: “My Flavor It Place” is the ideal restaurant for summer treats. Located in the downtown area of Palatine, Illinois, “My Flavor It Place” has an extensive menu including slushies, shaved ice, smoothies, milkshakes, floats, and good ole ice cream. Once you decide between all of those options, you have a long list of flavors and toppings to choose from too!

4. DREAM VACATION SPOT and why?

My dream vacation spot is Berlin, Germany. I’ve been to Germany once before and I loved it. The food, the architecture, everything was perfect. I would love to be able to go back. While I was in Germany I went to Munich and Lindau but not Berlin and I’d really like to go to a new city if/when I go to Germany again. This is a picture of me at the Zugspitz, the tallest mountain in Germany.
